Our History


1925

In 1925, Citizens State Bank was established in Somerville, Texas, marking a new chapter for the financial landscape. The bank began operations in a prominent two-story brick building at Avenue B and Seventh Street. This period was characterized by rapid growth and community integration, with key figures like J. F. Lyon, Dr. G. A. L. Kusch, and Horace C. Harden leading the way. The initial focus was on establishing a strong foundation and serving the local community with dedication and personalized service.

1930s

The 1930s brought both challenges and progress. Despite the hardships of the Great Depression, CSB remained steadfast in its commitment to the community. The leadership saw transitions, including the appointment of Dr. G. V. Pazdral as Vice-President. Dr. Pazdral's dual role as a medical professional and bank leader highlighted the close ties between CSB and the local community. The bank's perseverance during this turbulent time set the groundwork for future progress.

1940s

The 1940s were marked by resilience and adaptation. Prior to World War II, Ervin B. Flencher, Sr. served as a janitor at the bank and quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating dedication and leadership. This decade saw the bank navigating wartime challenges while continuing to serve local needs. The post-war years led to growth and new opportunities, strengthening CSB's position in the community.

1950s

The 1950s were a transformative decade for CSB, with Ervin B. Flencher, Sr. becoming a key figure in the banks evolution. His leadership and community involvement, including serving as Mayor of Somerville, reinforcing the bank's commitment to local development.

1967

The 1960s brought significant change with the bank's relocation to 8th Street in Somerville in 1967. This decade was marked by modernization and increased service offerings, setting the stage for future facility upgrades. The leadership of Ervin B. Flencher, Sr. paved the way for subsequent developments.

1979

In 1979, CSB underwent its first major expansion, adding 9,200 square feet to support its growing operations and introducing a drive-thru. During this period, Somerville also grew in popularity as Lake Somerville's amenities were improved and the lake was established as a state park by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

1989

In the 1980s, CSB acquired the First State Bank of Deanville (1989), marking its first additional branch. During this time, CSB also introduced its first ATM (pictured), further solidifying its commitment to staying abreast to advancements in the ever-changing financial landscape.

1990

In 1990, Citizens State Bank acquired Peoples National Bank in Caldwell. Shortly thereafter in 1992, Citizens State Bank acquired the deposits of Burleson County Savings Association, and established its first de novo branch in Brenham in 1999 (pictured).

2000s

The early 2000s continued the trend of growth and modernization, as Citizens State Bank celebrated its 75th anniversary. CSB's branch network also grew with the addition of locations in Snook (2003) and Navasota (2007). The bank's focus on technological advancements and service enhancement helped it stay competitive and responsive to customer needs in a rapidly evolving financial environment.

2010s

In 2019, the branch in Caldwell underwent renovations. Additionally, CSB navigated challenges and opportunities, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, during which the bank played a crucial role in providing financial support through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. This decade underscored CSB's resilience and commitment to its customers and community.

2021

In 2021, CSB marked a significant milestone by acquiring Burton State Bank, further expanding its footprint and service offerings. This acquisition brought the total number of CSB branches to seven, enhancing its ability to serve a growing and diverse customer base across Burleson, Washington, and Grimes counties.
